Back in July, I told you all about OpenAI’s newly formed Superalignment team.

Basically, because OpenAI believes we could have superintelligent AI within the next 10 years, now is the time to prepare by figuring out how to control it.

Naturally, that leads to the conversation of how the hell you can control something much smarter than you.

We knew that AI would probably play a role in this training inception, but now we know a bit more about exactly how.

In Weak-To-Strong Generalization, OpenAI shows that a GPT-2 level model can be used to elicit most of GPT-4’s capabilities (close to GPT-3.5 level performance).

In English, OpenAI took a GPT-4 trained by GPT-2 and compared it to a regular GPT-4. The goal was to see if GPT-2 can get GPT-4 to do what it wants.

Basically, can a dumb person make a smart person act like a smart person who does what the dumb person wants?

Obviously there’s still a lot of work to do, as there’s a world of difference between aligning GPT-4 and an all-knowing machine.

But, this is a method that is showing some real promise.
