Coming to the rescue

Gm. When you’re reading this I will have just touched down in London. After London, I’m heading to Nice, France, where I’m praying that I still have access to social media and that the water is anywhere close to as blue as the water in our dopamine hit today.

OpenAI’s AI Alignment Plan

Back in May, OpenAI put forth the idea that a superintelligent AI that ā€œexceeds expert skill level in most domainsā€ could become a reality within the next 10 years.

Because there’s no guarantee this AI won’t nuke us into oblivion, so we have to take measures to control it now while we have the upper hand. In this regard, OpenAI recommends 3 actions:

  • Some degree of coordination among the leading AI developers to ensure nobody is building anything too crazy.

  • An international regulatory body to make sure that this coordination among AI companies happens.

  • The technical capacity to make sure the superintelligence is safe.

The first two factors are actively underway, and now, OpenAI is going for the third.

The Superalignment Team

Enter the Superalignment team. Headed by OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and alignment team lead Jan Leike, the new team will have access to 20% of OpenAI’s computing power.

The mission? Build a ā€œroughly human-level automated alignment researcherā€. Basically, build an AI that trains other AIs.

If that sounds familiar, that’s because it is.

It’s A Copycat World

That’s because it’s the exact method that OpenAI competitor Anthropic is using to train its models.

Build AI, humanly train AI, and then have that AI train other AI’s.

Obviously, there is no guarantee this works. It’s possible that the error-prone AI models mess up their training efforts, and at that point, it’s anybody’s guess what happens.

But, considering that two of the big players in AI are training their models this way, there must be some legitimacy to the idea.

Why should I care? Your life will be much better off if AI is aligned correctly.
