AI's Military Push
GM! It’s Brett again. You know Paul Graham once said "I do not believe people in the future will be living in the same email hell we do now."
That quote hit hard. It's what drove me to start Micro.
While many have tried to fix email and failed, I believe now, with AI changing everything, is the perfect time to finally solve this.
Anyways, we're still onboarding folks to the private beta. Join the waitlist here. (Psst... Homescreen subscribers get off the waitlist faster!)

AI Goes To Washington
Last week Palantir announced they're teaming up with Anthropic and AWS to bring their Claude models to US defense and intelligence agencies.
Palantir will be the first industry partner to bring Claude models to classified environments for U.S. government intelligence and defense operations.

The partnership will operate through Palantir's AI Platform with Impact Level 6 accreditation - reserved for classified data deemed critical to national security.
The platform aims to support government operations with data processing, pattern recognition, and streamlining document review in classified environments. This marks a notable expansion of AI capabilities in defense operations.

Palantir's CTO Shyam Sankar pointed to their commercial success, citing how one insurance company used their AI platform with Claude to cut a two-week process down to three hours.
Interestingly, just days before, Meta made a similar move. They're now making their Llama models available for national security applications, working with contractors like Lockheed Martin, Oracle, and Palantir. Oracle's already using it for aircraft maintenance docs, while Scale AI is fine-tuning it for specific defense missions.
Meta is now allowing the Llama series of models to be used for national security applications by both US agencies and contractors, including Anduril and Palantir.

This shift is significant given the industry's history. In 2018, Google withdrew from Project Maven following employee protests over military AI applications.
This was a big surprise.
Project Maven was created to help defeat ISIS. If ever there was an opportunity for Google to fulfill it's mission of "don't be evil" this was it.
But for some reason, Google backed down.
They pulled out of Project Maven.

Now, major AI companies are actively pursuing defense partnerships - OpenAI is reportedly seeking military contracts, and Meta and Anthropic have formalized their defense sector availability.
The big picture - The defense sector is emerging as a critical market for AI companies, with Brookings Institute reporting a 1,200% increase in AI-related government contracts in March 2024. While the US military maintains a cautious approach to AI adoption, securing classified environment access has become a new competitive frontier for major tech companies.
