Elon Musk Starts new AI Company Called X.AI

It seems like it’s finally time for X, the the long-awaited “everything app” Musk has been been talking about building for decades.

Musk purchased thousands of GPUs (Graphical Processing Units) and registered a company called X.AI in the state of Nevada. To fund X.AI, the company authorized 100 million shares for sale and is courting interest from SpaceX and Tesla investors.

Further accelerating the path to X, Twitter, Inc. is now called X Corp. according to a court filing in California. Let’s not forget on October 4th, 2022, Elon tweeted “Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app.” Last Tuesday, Musk cryptically tweeted “X”.

What is X? It appears no one is quite sure yet except for Musk.

Musk said in May he might be looking for inspiration from Tencent’s WeChat, a Chinese social media app that includes messaging and video chatting, games, photo sharing, ride services, food delivery, banking, and shopping. "I think if we could achieve that, or even close to that with Twitter, it would be an immense success," Musk said.

Musk has already talked about integrating a payments platform into Twitter and setting up encrypted messaging so this would make sense. Twitter might become the superapp of the future. After all, Musk said that buying Twitter accelerated building X by 3-5 years.

Engineers on the team include Deepmind and OpenAI veterans like Igor Babuschkin and Manuel Kroiss.

Why should I care? People may be laughing about Twitter now, but if Musk’s X becomes the most popular and powerful app in the country, then Twitter would likely be at the heart of it. Let’s just say I’m not stopping tweeting anytime soon.

Google’s AI Search Sprint

The sky is blue. Tom Brady is the GOAT of football. And Google is the internet’s search engine.

These are just things that everybody knew to be true.

But, it appears that Google is quite concerned that times are changing. Bing’s AI integration turned it from the butt of jokes to the first legit threat to Google’s search crown.

These fears were only magnified when word got out that Samsung was considering making Bing its default search engine. This would be a $3B loss for Google, and could become a whole lot worse if Apple and their $20B search engine contract also defected.

So, Google did as any rational corporation would do in this situation: panic, and then race to fix the problem.

This race is a two-pronged attack known internally as “Magi”:

• Upgrading the existing search engine with AI features.

• Building an all-new AI search-engine that offers a “far-more personalized experience”.

Although Google has lagged a bit behind the AI race, at least compared to OpenAI, they are by no means dead in the water. Their DeepMind AI research lab is one of the best in the world, they have already released their own chatbot Bard, and they are now putting their collective muscle behind retaining search engine supremacy.

Google is under serious attack for the first time. Let’s see how they respond.

Why should I care? At this point, it looks inevitable that AI search engines are the future, which is great for consumers (AI technology is very good).
