The State Of AI Report

Every year, Nathan Benaich and the Air Street Capital team write the State of AI report, and it’s always a great peek into the latest research, commercial applications, politics, risks, and predictions surrounding the tech world’s hottest field.

Except for one issue: the thing is very long (163 slides, to be exact).

Obviously, you should read it in its entirety, but if you’re pressed for time Benaich produces a summary article. But that article is also kinda long, so if you’re really pressed for time, here’s the Homescreen summary.

Research

GPT-4 is king.
The industry is moving away from open-source with the exception of Llama.
Human-generated data is quickly running out, leading to the development of small, highly specialized datasets.

Industry

Nvidia is absolutely dominant, with its chips being used 19x more than all the alternatives combined.
ChatGPT is one of the fastest-growing internet products ever, and it’s especially popular among developers (who frequently could use a hand with coding).
But generative AI still has a problem with getting users to stick around.
Although AI has moved into other fields like pharma and defense, GenAI is still carrying the AI field on its back.

Politics

The question of how to regulate AI varies from government to government.
Deepfakes and misinformation are a real concern.
The debate over extinction is now a lively one.

Predictions

This is a section you should really read for yourself, but some of the interesting predictions include:
- Self-improving AI agents crush SOTA in a complex environment (for example, a AAA game).
- A generative AI media company is investigated for its misuse during the 2024 US election circuit.
- An AI-generated song breaks into the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 or the Spotify Top Hits 2024.
