Audio Gets A Bit More Stable

Forget all the drama; if there’s one thing that Stability AI can do, it’s produce bangers.

They did it before with Stable Diffusion, conquering the text-to-image space.

Now they are doing it again with Stable Audio, their attempt to conquer the text-to-audio space.

State Of The Art

Audio generation is traditionally tough for AI diffusion models because diffusion are usually trained to generate a fixed-size output. In other words, audio models are decent at producing 30-second soundbites, but bad for producing full songs.

However, Stable Audio is, as the kids say these days, built differently:

  • It allows for control over the content and length of the generated audio.

  • It is able to render 95 seconds of stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate in less than 1 second on an NVIDIA A100 GPU. In English: it is lightning fast.

The key to Stable Audio is a new model design known as latent diffusion, which operates similarly to Stable Diffusion’s art-generating model. Stable Audio starts with a whole bunch of noise, and slowly subtracts sounds until it reaches the desired outcome.

Now, for the important part: how does it sound?
