Checking in on Starship
Gm. The Emmys were on Monday, and I must say Jeremy Strong got absolutely robbed. Also have never heard of The Bear or Beef in my life. Worth watching?

All Hands On Deck Ship

Compared to other Elon enterprises X and Tesla, SpaceX flies a bit under the radar, especially for a company valued at a whopping $180B and has such lofty ambitions.
But now, itās time to check in on and celebrate one of the worldās greatest companies. Thankfully, Elon hosted a SpaceX all-hands meeting to do exactly that.
On the celebratory side, SpaceX had, by any measure, an amazing 2023. 96 flights for their Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, 2 Starship test flights, and a tripling of Starlinkās space internet traffic.
2024 looks to be more of the same. Elon is aiming for 140 Falcon launches and 10 Starship test flights, while Starlink is now offering cellphone towers in space.
Now, letās zero in on Starship. Test flight 2 was a definite improvement over test flight 1. The super heavy boosters (the actual rockets) worked flawlessly until blowing up while attempting to guide themselves down to a controlled splashdown, while the Starship (the upper half) died right before making it to orbit. Now we know why.
As Elon puts it:
"The reason that it actually didnāt quite make it to orbit was we vented the liquid oxygen, and the liquid oxygen ultimately led to a fire and an explosion. We wanted to vent the liquid oxygen because we normally wouldnāt have that liquid oxygen if we had a payload. Ironically, if it had a payload, it would have reached orbit.ā
Elon says he thinks Starship has a very good chance of reaching orbit next time around. Weāll find out if heās right when Starship takes flight again in a few weeks.
The Big Picture: Of all of Elonās achievements, SpaceX may very well be the greatest. And they arenāt done yet.
