GM! It’s Brett. If you’re fundraising, you should read this.

You probably see headlines about $50M seed rounds at crazy valuations, but also know people who raise $2M at modest ones.

So do you start your raise on the high or low end?

My rec is simple: take a look at the data and make an educated guess about where compared to the average round size you should go, based on your traction and… well, you. It doesn’t feel great to say, but pedigree still matters.

Good luck out there.

💻 Olivia Moore’s AI Stack (AI Partner, a16z)

Here are the 10 tools that make up Olivia’s personal AI stack:

  • Comet - her default AI browser

  • Julius - AI data analyst

  • Happenstance - AI people search

  • Granola - AI meeting notes

  • Gamma - AI slide decks, docs, sites

  • Willow - AI voice dictation

  • Superhuman - AI email

  • Overlap - AI clip editing

  • Krea - AI creative partner

  • ChatGPT - self-explanatory

What’s interesting isn’t the list - it’s the pattern: AI is now embedded across every workflow - search, analysis, meetings, comms, slides, creative, even dictation.

This is the real shift: people aren’t “using AI tools,” they’re stitching together an AI production layer across their entire workday.

💥 This marketing screw up is an incredible business lesson

Rippling put up this giant subway poster that basically says, “other software is bad and Rippling is great.”

The ad itself is confusing, but the core message is obvious. And the irony is… the exact opposite is true. Rippling is, in reality, terrible software that’s widely disliked by its own users. When I posted a photo of the ad and made a short comment, it went viral instantly. The replies were full of people saying, “yes, this is exactly my experience.”

This is why you can’t boast about things that aren’t true. The temptation is there because “it’s just sales,” but this stuff always catches up to you. You don’t get to bend reality for long. The market will correct you.

I’m sure the marketer behind that ad probably got fired. But firing a marketer doesn’t fix the underlying problem. The issue isn’t the campaign - it’s the product. You can't advertise your way out of a bad experience.

And this is the part founders always forget: if people genuinely love your product, nothing can touch you. If they don’t, no amount of clever marketing will save you.
