Gm. I got an Apple Watch for Christmas, and I gotta say, this thing is kindaβ¦cracked? It tells me how I sleep. It lets me delete emails as soon as I get them. It looks swaggy. Why doesnβt everyone have one of these things?

Metaβs AGI Ambitions

The journey for the major AI companies may differ, but the destination is the same. They want AGI. OpenAI has said so. Google has said so. And now Meta has said so as well.
Weβve come to this view that, in order to build the products that we want to build, we need to build for general intelligence.
So, heβs shifting Metaβs AI strategy to better reflect these goals, starting with combining its AI research and product teams. The reason for this is simple: it makes Meta more competitive in the talent wars.
Besides talent, the other major component of any AGI ambitions is computing power. Zuckβs got this covered as well, as they are sinking billions of dollars into Nvidia chips. 600,000 by the end of 2024, to be exact.
So, letβs say that Zuck does build an AGI. What is he going to do with it? Well, at least for now, it appears heβs planning to do the same thing heβs doing with Llama: open-source it, as long as itβs safe to do so.
The question then becomes how does AI fit into Metaβs overall umbrella. On the social media front, AI could make its apps more attractive, which it is already trying with initiatives like Gen AI Personas. Meanwhile, on the Metaverse front, Zuck sees a future in which virtual worlds are both created and at least partially populated by AI.
So, kind of like the Matrix, but hopefully without the whole human enslavement thing.
The Big Picture: Many people counted him out, but Zuck quietly has Metaβs stock close to $1T again. Who knows if heβll reach his AI goals, but weβre not betting against him.
