Gm! It’s Brett again. I’m in SF for a few days for meetings with investors, friends and some folks at Open AI. had the chance to visit the HQ a few weeks ago and it is nothing short of intoxicating being around so much optimism and nerdiness.

Just a month ago, the LLM scene was dominated by GPT 4. But Anthropic clearly didn't get the memo, because their new release, Claude 3 Opus, has come all guns blazing.

The benchmarks don't lie.

On coding tasks, Claude 3 Opus is demolishing the competition. It has crazy vision capabilities and is much better at multilingual tasks than GPT 4.

Opus even has the best recall with a 200K context, a huge improvement over GPT 4's 128K.

It also excels at logic, reasoning, and analysis. No better person than Tyler Cowen to attest to that 👇

This dominance is likely due to significant enhancements under the hood (which we don’t know of). Take language learning – there are reports of Claude 3 mastering entire languages from just a few translation examples. 

While Claude 3 Opus is pricier than OpenAI's GPT 4 Turbo ($15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens versus GPT 4 Turbo's $10 and $30), it seems those on the bleeding edge of AI believe the potential gains in performance outweigh the expense.

Claude 3 isn't the only impressive model challenging OpenAI's dominance lately. The AI arena has been heating up with releases from Google, Mistral, and Inflection. It's getting crowded at the top. 

For now, it's Anthropic's world, and we're all living in it.

The Big Picture: There are now 4 competitors to GPT 4 — Inflection 2.5, Claude 3 Opus, Mistral Large, and Gemini 1.5.
