GM! It's Brett. I got ranked in the top 1% of engineers at small startups last week. Coming from someone who didn't know what a pull request was two years ago, that one hit different.

A lot happened in AI this week. Let's get into it.

👀 How I became technical AF

I got ranked in the top 1% of engineers at small startups on a platform called Weave. Number one of all non-technical people.

A year ago I had no idea how any of it really worked.

Here's what changed.

I stopped trying to understand code and started understanding concepts. I ask agents to explain things using my own metaphors. Once I have the mental model, the code starts making sense.

I treat agents like a great manager. I ask questions instead of giving commands. Socratic method. Push back, probe, make it explain its reasoning. The output quality went up immediately.

I use what already exists. 99 times out of 100, whatever you're building has been built. Open source, GitHub, the whole internet is out there. I point the agent at it and say "do that."

I kicked off an agent to read through our entire codebase and write markdown files explaining how everything works. Now I actually understand what we built.

None of this requires a CS degree. It requires being a good manager and being genuinely curious.

Full breakdown in the thread.

Framer helps teams design, build, and launch their marketing sites lightning fast. With the ability to publish hundreds of CMS pages in a single click, operate at a global scale with seamless localization, and even host unified content across multiple domains, teams have never been able to ship faster. Trusted by companies like Miro, Bilt, and Perplexity.

  • Speed without chaos: ship pages and updates faster without turning the site into a fragile set of one-off hacks

  • Reduce dependency: shift routine brand and marketing work out of product engineering queues.

  • Production-grade foundation: Run real marketing systems (CMS, SEO, performance optimization) with governance and collaboration

💥 Claude Code now handles 4% of all public GitHub commits. The guy who built it says coding is solved.

Boris Cherny built Claude Code as a quick hack. It became the tool handling 4% of all public GitHub commits. Daily active users doubled last month.

His actual position: coding is solved. Not a provocative take, that's what he believes. Spotify's best developers haven't written code since December.

The counterintuitive part: Anthropic deliberately underfunded teams and gave them unlimited tokens. Limited resources plus unlimited capability forced real-world iteration. Better products came out of constraint.

Cherny also briefly left for Cursor. Stayed two weeks and came back. The person who built the best AI coding tool in the world tried the main competitor and turned around.

What's next after coding? Cowork, Anthropic's push into knowledge work. If coding is solved, everything else is next.

The full conversation is worth your time. Lenny pulls out the stuff Cherny doesn't usually talk about.

🧠 ON MY MIND

  • 29% of the Fortune 500 are live, paying customers of a leading AI startup. In 3 years. Coding leads at 10-20x productivity gains. Harvey hit $200M ARR. The enterprise AI story is real and moving fast. — a16z

  • Goldman's CEO says 2026 could be the biggest M&A year in history. Rate cuts, fiscal stimulus, capital supercycle converging. Tech is leading. — a16z

  • Two non-technical founders built a government prototype with Claude Code in weeks, won a state contract, and saved Virginians $1B/year. This is the new playbook. — Anthropic

  • Reddit is adding human verification for "fishy behavior." Bot proliferation got bad enough that the platform had to respond at the infrastructure level. Worth watching. — TechCrunch

  • How Boris Cherny thinks about engineering growth. Not about writing more code. About building the instincts for what to hand to AI. — Pragmatic Engineer
