Arrivederci ChatGPT

Gm. Notice anything different? We just got a redesign! Speaking of design, we’ve got a super cool 3D design tool for you at the bottom in Founder’s Corner. Make sure to check it out.

šŸ  NEUROTECH

The Neurotech Golden Era 🧠

It goes without saying, but not many things in your life are more important than your brain. The old noggin is responsible for how you feel, see the world, and perform, just to name a few. That’s why neurotechnology (tech that can enhance our brains) is so alluring.

And to the delight of wannabe cyborgs everywhere, that technology is now coming en masse.

To celebrate, here are 3 of the more interesting recent neurotech advancements.

Expansion Microscopy

The brain, along with being incredibly complex, is quite difficult to study. That’s because many of its most important parts are small and delicate. You can’t just go poking around in there.

Hydrogels (a water-absorbing material) fix this problem by enlarging the typically microscopic brain samples. This ā€œexpansion microscopyā€ makes it much easier to study and ultimately improve the brain.

Brain Cell Replacement

A lot of brain problems reveal themselves in old age. Thus, if you could replace old brain cells with fresh ones, you might be able to prevent and/or cure common brain diseases like Alzhemiers.

Although this has so far proven impossible, scientists are now experimenting with gradually replacing the neocortex (part of the brain responsible for attention and thought). Although still early, if successful, this could revolutionize brain treatment.

Brain-Computer Interfaces

We covered Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) extensively not too long ago, but they still deserve mention here.

The futuristic brain chips are among the coolest technologies in existence today. Allowing disabled people to regain independence through mind control of technology? That’s freaking dope.

And, if Elon has his way, you’ll be an AI-hybrid human able to stream music directly into your brain.

The Big Picture: There are 58 million Americans with mental health issues. More than 6 million Americans have Alzheimer’s. 5.4 million Americans live with paralysis. Neurotech offers salvation for these people, and thus, could end up being one of the more impactful technologies of the coming years.

šŸ  ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

ChatGPT is now blocked in Italy

On March 31, Italy ordered OpenAI to stop servicing their country.

On April 1st, OpenAI said OK and geoblocked Italy from accessing ChatGPT.

The Italian government’s main complaints were:

  1. How OpenAI is using the data

  2. ChatGPT access to minors

The Italian DPA is concerned OpenAI is breaching the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and is opening an investigation.

What are users saying?

In the last couple of weeks I’ve seen a lot of headlines of Italian newspapers repeating the same mantra: ChatGPT = DANGER for our children end for our data. So I’m afraid that even the population will soon start to be afraid of the ā€œevilā€ AI.

What is alarming from my point of view, is that this country has ignored and still ignores how important technological progress and research are for the development of its citizens, it’s wealth, and it’s competitiveness with other countries. We should study AI, explore it, invest on it, understand it in order to control it.

Maurizio Chairo, OpenAI Forum

ChatGPT should be considered a public utility. It is providing free education & resources to everyone. There is a massive difference between collecting data to use for training, to collecting data to be packaged and sold for advertising (which is what Google does but won their lawsuit claiming that they are a public utility)

Ronald R., OpenAI Forum

According to one user on the OpenAI forum, it does seem like Italians can still use ChatGPT if they use a VPN and don’t use a credit card based in Italy.

Regardless, the Italian government’s move is a huge block from people using ChatGPT. Only time will tell if this was a wise decision.

Why should I care? Well, if Italy can block ChatGPT, then perhaps other governments will too. With all the AI-doomerism spreading around the internet wildfire, perhaps your ChatGPT plug-in startup may not be the safe easy money you hoped for. As Taleb says, you’ve got to watch out for black swans. Now is more important than ever to spread the positive outcomes of AI tools like ChatGPT, DALL-E 2, and more.

What else is going on?

Stat: 12 million: The amount of WordPress websites that are vulnerable to a serious exploit in the Elementor Pro plugin. If you use that plugin, make sure you upgrade to the latest version ASAP.

Elon explains why he’s still working. Wait til the end. Goosebumps.

šŸ› ļø FOUNDERS CORNER

The best resources we came across this weekend that will help you become a better founder, builder, or investor.

šŸŽØ Spline is a 3D design tool you can use for everything from iPhone mockups to games and prototypes.

šŸ‘¾ Rewind may the coolest app in the world. It captures everything you do on your computer and turns the info into a searchable database. Forgot who said what on a meeting? Search through Rewind.

āœ‰ļø Recurring Emails for Gmail is a life-saver. You can’t send recurring emails in Gmail so I use this app to send myself recurring emails with reminders. I find it more helpful than the Reminders app tbh, maybe I’m weird.
