Sam Altman Strikes Again

Gm. I experienced Tesla’s Autopilot for the first time while driving to Lake Tahoe. I haven’t been that scared while driving since my first-time parallel parking with a dude honking behind me.

Basically, this is a long-winded way to say that the hacker in story two who willingly tried out Elon Mode full self-driving is an absolute madman.

OpenAI’s App Store

There is a meme on tech Twitter that most AI startups are just ChatGPT wrappers. There’s nothing wrong with running a ChatGPT wrapper, per se, except that you are always one OpenAI update away from being obsolete.

But, what if there was a way for developers to make money with AI that didn’t involve wasting time and energy on something one Sam Altman command away from the grave?

Enter the OpenAI App Store.

An AI Marketplace

Technically, it’s not an app store but a marketplace where people could sell AI models they built for themselves to other businesses, but you get the point.

The potential benefits for both developers and buyers are clear:

  • Developers are able to monetize their work.

  • Buyers (businesses, freelancers, etc) are able to purchase cutting-edge AI models.

And for OpenAI, the benefits are even greater:

  • They get to spread their technology to an ever greater base of customers.

  • They most likely will make money via commission. As we know from Apple’s App Store, these commissions are stupidly profitable (~$85B in 2022).

This is all great, but there might be something even deeper going on here.

Open-Source Who?

On Monday, we talked about Meta’s open-source AI plans. TLDR: By open-sourcing their AI models, Meta’s AI influence spreads without them actually having to do any work, undercutting OpenAI in the process.

Could this AI app store be a way to fight back without having to go open-source? It’s easy to see how it might be:

  • Developers use OpenAI’s technology to build dope apps.

  • Which are then sold on the app store, bringing in revenue for OpenAI.

  • While also spreading OpenAI’s influence and preventing people from using their competitors.

  • AND giving them more high-quality data which can then be used to improve their closed-source GPT model.

All the benefits of open-source without having to go open-source.

Obviously, this is all speculation, but even if none of this comes to fruition, the app store is an intriguing and potentially very profitable addition to OpenAI’s product suite.

The Big Picture: Regardless of their intentions, the app store will only be successful if OpenAI’s models remain top of the line.

We’re Going Elon Mode

Over the last decade, Elon has repeatedly talked about a self-driving Tesla. However, despite the DogeFather’s promises, all we currently have is an ā€œAutopilotā€ that is a (albeit, much) better version of cruise control.

Unfortunately, Autopilot comes with Twitter-levels of controversy:

But Salvation might be on the way soon, courtesy of the prophet hacker @GreenTheOnly.

Normally, drivers have to at least maintain some focus on the road. Apparently, there is a secret function in Tesla’s FSD software known as ā€œElon Modeā€. What Elon Mode does is make it so that you don’t have to drive at all.

Pretttyyy coool. Just imagine all the things you can do during Elon Mode:

  • You can get some work done.

  • You can tweet at Elon about being in Elon Mode.

  • You can catch up on the sleep you lost thinking about your crypto investments.

The possibilities are truly endless!

The Bottom Line: Tesla is already the world’s best-selling car, and FSD could take things to the next level.
